Wilderness Leadership Training

Training Tips That Really Do The Trick

To train you dog, you first need to understand just how your four-footed friend thinks. Dogs, no matter how cute and cuddly, are descendents of far wilder ancestors – wolves.

Though they've become more docile and responsive to our commands over the centuries, these beautiful animals have kept their excellent eyesight, keen sense of small, and their need to be a member of a pack. Only today that pack is you and the other members of your household.

To train your dog, you need to understand, learn and use this to your advantage. A pack has one leader (that's you) and others (everyone else in the house) who show respect to that leader. Most breeds, with a few exceptions, don't want to lead the pack; they feel safer with someone else in charge. If your dog senses that you're a wimp in need of direction, he'll gladly step into that leadership role and rule the roost. Somebody has to be the top dog – if you won't, your dog will.

When it comes to training, what you want to do is redirect the dog's natural inclinations to outlets that are acceptable to you. Training continues the work of building a relationship between you and your faithful companion. The process, done correctly and with patience, helps to establish communication, enhance understanding and is a subtle demonstration of your command over the dog.

Whether house training, training for obedience, or teaching your four footed friend a few more involved tricks to impress company – start with an attitude of quiet confidence. From there, use some of these common-sense guidelines while working with your dog:

1.Always be firm and consistent – this will show your dog that he can't get away with misbehaving, even if he is the cutest thing you've ever seen.

2.Keep training sessions short – no more than 10 to 15 minutes two times per day, depending on your dog's attention span.

3.Find a distraction-free place to work – choose a quiet, familiar environment free of distractions so the dog's attention isn't drawn to other things that make it hard to focus on what you want to teach.

4.Every so often, show your dog who's boss – make him move and take his place, or eat your meal before feeding him his, these simple actions put your pet in his place and establishes you as a leader.

5.Never yell at or hit your dog – this teaches him to be nervous and fearful around you and keeps him from learning what you want to teach.

6.Use repetition – do things over and over and over again, using the same tone of voice, command and hand gestures until he gets it, reward every time your dog does as you ask.

7.Use reward – not only the treats your dog loves, but lavish your dog with praise in a high-pitched, happy voice and add lots of squeals of delight for effect and be sure you say his name frequently.

8.When issuing commands like "sit" or "come" use a low, gruff voice – dogs don't understand any of the words we say, but they do recognize and respond to a change in tone.

9.Practice learned tricks regularly – even after he's got a trick, reinforce what he or she knows by doing the trick again and again every day; teach only one new trick each week.

If you're having problems training your dog – don't lose hope (or patience). Start by talking to your vet (or breeder) and asking for some suggestions. You might also want to talk with other owners whose doge are well behaved and get some tips and tricks to use. If you like to use the computer, go online to some of the discussion forums devoted to dogs, visit dog.com for example, to talk to other dog owners who are also struggling to get their "best friends" to behave properly.

The time and effort you spend working with your dog will make a huge difference in his life, and yours. Not only will your dog be happier and easier to control in dangerous situations, but also he or she will have more freedom because you can count on your pet to behave properly in your home, with company or when you're out and about.

Outdoor Leadership Training

So what's this Coasteering all about..?

Coasteering originated in the late 19th century when climbers would traverse rocks at sea level. Fishermen have unknowingly been coasteering for years. The 21st century sees coasteering as one of the fastest growing adventure sports.

Pembrokeshire Coasteering:
Wetsuited up, plus buoyancy aid, helmet and trainers you will see the coast from a whole new dimension while adventure swimming, rock hopping and cliff jumping. Coasteering is inspirational, whether your after a dare devil extreme experience in a boiling turmoil of water and rocks or a relaxing safari in a calm glassy sea.

Who can Coasteer..?

Coasteering is ideal for a variety of groups, as it not only challenges the individual but can facilitate teamwork, trust and leadership training.  Minimum age is 8years.  Ideal for groups of Stag/Hen parties, families, Corporate away days, anniversary/birthday celebrations and clubs.

Ability..?

Due to the nature of the activity, it is always assumed that participants need to be strong swimmers.  This, however, is NOT the case.  Coasteering is accessible to all. CQC can also cater for the physically/mentally disabled (by prior arrangement) and staff have extensive experience in this field.

Why stand on the coast path looking down when you can jump in feet first, get up close and personal with Pembrokeshire’s beautiful wildlife.

WIN a Half-Day Coasteer Session for 2 people

The draw will take place on 30th July 2009. Winners will be notified by email and post. Voucher valid for 12 months from the draw date. Winners can choose the location and date *subject to availability. Min age of participants 8yrs. Under 18's must get permission from parent/guardian before entering.

Outdoor Leadership

Why Should You Conduct Leadership Camp?

Leadership Is one virtue that is not inborn but nurtured. Personality development is an interesting aspect of life. As a famous saying goes “You are not what you are; You are what you want to be”. We all want to be great achievers in life.  Achievers transcend the ordinary. They do not do different things, but do things differently and successfully. A leader is one achiever who leaves a trail to follow, A trail that will forever be regarded as righteous, reliable and replicable (who else doesn’t want to imitate). They have risen from modest of modest beginnings, soared to great heights and withstood the ravages of time in their path to glory.

It is, therefore, important, not impertinent to identify leadership qualities in and around a social order. They are indispensable for the well being of the society.  A society, that has to march towards prosperity in tandem with the diverse forces trying to dismantle it.  We needed a Mahatma for our independence, a Lincoln to bring end the civil war in America and Nelson Mandela to eradicate apartheid in South Africa. They stood for their people and voiced their concerns. Ultimately, their diligence, charm and charisma worked into the hearts of the people and they set examples for generations to come for achieving their objective. Hence, leaders are representatives of a group of like minded people working towards a goal. Isn’t this a caliber that each one should posses? There is no dearth of good qualities in oneself; a selfless attitude in alliance with a burning desire to help the less privileged will always be a distinct quality of a meticulous leader. The more,  the better for the society.

Surprisingly, many of us wouldn’t have been aware of the leadership qualities in us, except when we are caught unawares in an extraordinary situation. In an otherwise normal life, one isn’t exposed to such anomalies every other day. The strength and acumen to handle these tasks in an effective manner is what makes the leader stand apart from his peers. These traits are influenced by the way one is brought up and the circumstances he is exposed to. Though ordinary or affluent, a person should bear the persona to rise above the ordinary and lead from the front when the need arises. Camps, counseling sessions, sermons, and society gatherings all play a crucial part in molding a layman to a leader. Nobody knows when the transition will take into effect.

Thus, it is never a game too old to play the role of a leader.  We should prepare ourselves to be the fore runner, surpass the line of mediocrity and set high standards for prospective trailblazers. A strict regimen of exercising the mind, body and soul will fortify our stance to become consistent, confident and capable leaders. Today’s world is in dire need of such workforce. Every person, in his own simple way, can contribute, by preserving the ethics of mankind, respect the existence of his subsidiaries and have the fortitude to fight for their privileges. Sure to say “Great leaders do not bloom, they are sculptured”.

Christian focused alternative to NOLS?

I really like the idea of spending a semester at the National Outdoor Leadership School but I was wondering if there is a program similar that is Christian based. Do you know of any?

Here are some schools I found. Some of the programs are called "recreation and leisure studies". Try googling that to see what you can find.

I found North Greenville University has a program/major for this and is in South Carolina.

Simpson University in California.

Gordon College in Mass (Not the one in Georgia)

John Brown University in Arkansas.

Houghton College in New York

Colorado Christian University offers a minor in outdoor leadership.
