Credit Counseling Services - What is a Good Company?
The best credit counseling companies maintain an impeccable reputation.
When considering a service, inquire about the company’s certification and how many years experience counselors have. Ask about additional professional licenses. Check with the Better Business Bureau for reports. The finest companies welcome questions and provide detailed information in response to each question.
Hector Milla Editor of the "Credit Card Debt Counseling" website -- http://www.CreditCardDebtCounseling.biz -- pointed out;
“…The best credit counseling companies also maintain extensive libraries containing practical tips for preparing a budget, financial tips, lists of government resources and contact information, and much more. You should have unlimited access to all library information. This information is frequently available online for download…”
Counselors always evaluate each person’s financial condition. Everyone is unique and presents new challenges. You should receive open, frank and professional advice, based on years of experience helping people in need. For example, a counselor may recommend cutting monthly expenses, taking on a second job, or offer resources to assist you in finding a better paying job. The counselor must be able to explain, to your satisfaction, why each of these suggestions is a wise choice.
The effectiveness of credit counseling depends on the severity each person’s situation. Start early when problems become apparent, and you may find simple solutions are readily available. If you wait until you receive a notice of default, you options may be unnecessarily limited.
Lifestyle changes alone may not resolve past due debts and keep them current. In this circumstance, your counselor should offer expert advice on a broad selection of financial alternatives. These alternatives include debt management plans, debt settlements and potentially bankruptcy. Each counselor must be capable of discussing each of these the topics in detail, and provide full disclosure about the potential advantages and disadvantages associated with each option.
“…Working with a counselor should be a positive experience. The best companies monitor all counselors carefully, to insure their primary focus is helping you. If your experience is not positive, great companies want to know how they may correct a problem and offer better service…” added H. Milla.

I really don't understand how to read my credit report. Is there any non-profit or government help out there?
I have a couple school loans. However, I have about ten entries from different companies on my report collecting these two school loans. I do not get any mail from these company because of my moves. I don't know who I should contact to start paying them. Is there any free credit help or counseling out there?
I have these credit reports already! I need help to fix my credit because I don't know which one to contact.
It is a government school loan. I really don't think that I can get away with the "7 years rule". They already took my tax return from me this year.
Here's a the Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) site: http://www.nfcc.org/ . They're a non-profit counseling service.
It sounds like your loans have been passed around to several collection agencies. You may want to start with the original creditor and see if they still own the debts or not. Sometimes collection agencies are just agents and sometimes they purchase bad debts.
