Is a Masters of Professional studies degree worth anything? I am considering it, but is it of any real value?

I don't want to spend the next 2 years earning a worthless degree and I don't want to get further in debt to earn a degree that will not increase my value in the job market. It seems appealing because it is general and seems to be applicable to professional employment/management in general. The concentration will be in strategic leadership. Does anyone know if the degree is worth it? It is appealing because I can take most of the classes online and it will not interfere with my work schedule.

I suggest you build on your undergraduate degree and look for a master's program that, at the least, has a program title that is reflective of content and that offers focused studies in a discipline that gives you greater marketability. If you are interested in Strategic Leadership, get a business degree or MSHRM; teaching or training...a Masters in Education.

You run a very real risk of a potential employer looking at the words "Master of Professional Studies" and wondering what the heck that means and dismissing your acheivements. It sounds like a graduate degree in being a professional student! You should not have to start a job search by having to explain your degree. Content confusion can be the difference between getting the interview or having your resume being tossed. Plus, in the age of electronic resume submissions, your resume can be filtered out because the degree name doesn't match any category the computer is programmed to read as valid.

Colleges do a disservice to students by labeling degree programs with ambiguous names. In a blatent effort to generate graduate programs that have mass appeal (ie; lots of revenue) and marketing them as opportunities for students to "focus their studies to match their career goals", degrees like this often end up with watered down content and little credibility. The appeal of the degree often lies in the flexible scheduling and ease of learning and not in its content, which is exactly what the school is hoping you buy into. Graduate programs are inherently designed to focus, not generalize, advanced studies. If the degree is offered by a for-profit online institution (like U of Phoenix, for example), you are further crippling your marketability. There is nothing wrong with on line learning; it is an excellent option for working adults....just be very cautious as to the school's reputation, the quality of instruction and ultimately, the return on investment.

Ask the school for a list of students who have graduated from this program. Find out how many obtained jobs as a result of this specific degree...not just getting a job because a Masters was required, or a list of who were promoted as a result of earning this specific degree. Make them show you hard data that supports the marketability of an MPS degree. If they can't, well...

As to your question, which really is asking about continuing your studies...yes, by all means go for a master's degree...just not one in Professional Studies.

Please excuse my rant, but after years of working in higher ed, this trend of offering subpar degrees that serve to generate revenue at the expense of students just enrages me.
